Leather Stays by savivi Leather Stays by savivi
I commissioned a set of 18th century leather stays as a start of my historical "lower class working girl"wardrobe and couldn't be happier with them.

I was so excited, that I couldn't wait, and had to wear them with my 19th century shift and 1980's hairband wig, to sit on my housemate's very Victorian reminiscent chair.

*nods approvingly* very wench-like. Though I doubt even a working-class girl from the nineteenth century would be thus reposed in just her shift and stays.

The wig is definitely a different touch...something uique to the whole outfit ...setting? Very nicely done. I don't think I could wear one of those corsits? is that what it's called? I'd run out of breath too soon, lol! :). But you totally kick butt in it! :D. Have a great day and happy outfit wearings to you :huggle: :D. Toodles! :D.

all the sudden I've been seeing leather stays start popping up everywhere. Can I ask where you commissioned them? Also - I haven't seen any detail shots of how people are making them yet - is the this one piece with a separate stomacher, or are there seams anywhere on the body part? and is there any other stiffening used, or is it just leather? (and the "boning channels" just decorative)?

Hey Janey-jane! I got them from RedFlowerRepros on Etsy. It could be that there are so many because they come from the same place, as they're relatively inexpensive. The leather stays fit entirely with what I wanted to do, since I really can't afford to be upper middle class or high class anyway, so I'm starting poor and working my way up. At some point I'd like to get cloth stays (But I also want stays and corsets from many different eras).

The back is laced as well, and as for stiffening, I'm not sure if you're talking about something adhered to the leather, or some kind of spray. The leather is pretty thick, and malleable, but sturdy. The "boning channels" are just decorative.

Maybe this weekend I'll take a bunch of shots from different angles so you can see it. I'm very interested in what you think, since I love your work.

I did get a tiny bit light headed after walking a bit and then sitting. It takes some getting used to, but it is surprisingly comfy.

Haha, a 1960s pixie cut wouldn't fit too well with the stays, I think. I love the curls. The thing is HUGE and monstrous, and perfect for making large styles.

Who was that lady.. there was one in a popular/classic novel that had short hair in an earlier setting...
OH YEAH! Outlander!! The first time she went back in time she had really short(curly)hair. And people thought she was odd. lol! but I loved the touch.

Yeah, but it was also 40s really short curly hair, which may have not been all that short by today's standards. I liked that, too.

Now, I should also have gotten paid to have my hair cut, and they would have used my hair for wigs. That's an option... but it would not have been the style I have now. Maybe the one of the wig... we'll see. I'll still searching.
